Swype’s Texting Technology Gains More Carrier, Handset-Maker Support

T-Mobile USA said today that Swype, the text input technology designed for touchscreens, is being rolled out on the new myTouch 3G and the upcoming HTC HD2. The announcement marks the second U.S. carrier and second handset-maker to support the startup’s quirky text input method.

Swype’s CEO Mike McSherry told mocoNews that the two T-Mobile handsets are just the beginning and that Swype will be preloaded on at least 10 phone in the first six months of 2010, spanning multiple OEMs, carriers, operating systems and regions.

Late last year, Verizon Wireless started selling the new Samsung Omnia II with Swype, which Samsung called “Genius Texting.” The technology, being developed by the Seattle-based company, attempts to make touchscreen keyboards easier and more accurate. A user drags their finger from letter to letter in a very fluid manner, rather than pressing each individual character.

Swype will be integrated in the new version of T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G, which is available starting today. In addition to having Swype built-in, the new hardware sports a built-in 3.5mm headset jack, updated music player and has additional memory with 288 MB of RAM. It’s conceivable that the myTouch phones sold to date could receive an over-the-air update to include Swype. T-Mobile also plans to integrate Swype into a number of future devices, including the HTC HD2, a Windows Mobile phone coming this spring.

In December, Swype received funding from both Samsung and Nokia (NYSE: NOK), indicating that the two handset makers will deploy the technology on a broad basis. With today’s announcement, there’s clearly support also coming from multiple carriers and HTC.

Just yesterday, a study released by the NPD Group found that the majority of U.S. consumers are still basing their phone-buying decision on how well the device inputs text. That has led to an increase in the number of Qwerty keyboards and touchscreens sold.

With the launch of the updated T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) myTouch3G (myTouch 3G 1.2, for those of you keeping score at home), T-Mobile has kicked off a partnership with Swype to include the Swype keyboard on many of its touchscreen handsets. The Swype keyboard is the first truly innovative virtual keyboard to hit the scene in some time, and offers a familiar QWERTY layout that eschews the old-school method of tapping keyboard keys in favor of a letter-tracing method that has the user dragging their finger across keys to form a word. Gone are the days of inefficiently trying to avoid typos as you tap out words – it’s all about swiping your finger to “type” your emails.

The T-Mobile myTouch3G might be the first T-Mobile handset to be blessed with the more accurate and clumsy-finger-friendly Swype keyboard, but it won’t be the last. We’re told to expect to see Swype doing its thing on the upcoming HTC HD2 as well as a handful of other Android- and Windows Mobile-powered smartphones in the coming months.

T-Mobile USA have thrown up their latest Android handsets, though don’t get too excited: we’re looking at a basic refresh with nothing more than a 3.5mm headphone jack to tempt you. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G has been updated with that much-prized socket, rather than demanding you use either HTC’s ExtUSB handsfree kit or the cumbersome adapter.

What we don’t know yet is how much the new versions – which will be released in black and white – will cost. Nor have T-Mobile confirmed release dates; both smartphones are merely shown as “coming soon”, and there are no product pages as yet.

It seems likely that the new myTouch 3G will be significantly cheaper than the myTouch 3G Fender Edition, which currently retails for $179.99 with a new contract, if only because it comes with a microSD card that, at 8GB, is half the size. We’ll keep an eye on the T-Mobile site to see if they add up any more information.

Update: T-Mobile USA have been in touch to confirm that the new myTouch 3G is available from today, priced at $149.99 with a new agreement. As well as the 3.5mm headphone socket it now has 288MB of memory and Swype preinstalled.

No offense meant to Eric Clapton, but not everybody wants a faux wood phone. And yet, it seems like there are many folks in this subset scattered across this fruited plain who’d like a real 3.5mm headphone jack on their phone, and for those crazy people there’s at last the T-Mobile myTouch 3G to suit them. The phone has just been listed in white and black versions on T-Mobile’s store, and lack all the fancy app and content frills of the Fender Limited Edition, and have even been consigned to mere 8GB microSD cards (while Fender jams away on a 16GB slice). So far T-Mobile makes no mention of price, but with the original myTouch 3G (which we’re guessing isn’t long for this earth) still at $150 and the Fender edition at $180, we’re not expecting these phones to land at a price that matches the age of this handset — namely, between $99 and free. Sure, that incoming 2.1 update will be nice, but there’s a lot of good phone to be had out there for $150.

Update: There’s official PR out now. The handset will be replacing the current myTouch at the same $150 pricepoint and is available today. Other tweaks include a couple of minor pre-loaded apps, 288MB of RAM and Swype for text input instead of the standard Android QWERTY. Full PR is after the break.

T-Mobile has teamed with Fender Music and Eric Clapton to market the Android-powered myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition phone. The handset certainly looks the part, featuring a faux-wood, sunburst finish inspired by the Fender Stratocaster guitar. The phone will ship preloaded with such Clapton classics as “Layla,” “My Father’s Eyes,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Heart” and “Wonderful Tonight.” It will also include tracks by Wyclef Jean, Avril Lavigne and Brad Paisley, as well as various music-related Android apps.

Last July I took a look at the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and a few weeks afterwards I purchased my own myTouch 3G. I then returned it for a T-Mobile Touch Pro2 because I just couldn’t give up a physical QWERTY keyboard. I won’t go into all of the details of this new myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition because the device is just about the same as the myTouch 3G. I will point out the improvements made in this device, including hardware and software, along with my thoughts on its appeal on T-Mobile USA given that the Nexus One can be purchased for the same price. Check out the cool Fender sunburst color scheme on the device in my image gallery. The original myTouch 3G was focused on personalization aspects and this new version is still focused on customization for your personality. The Fender Limited Edition device is actually made in a limited quantity so T-Mobile may run out of these before everyone who wants one can buy it. The demographic for T-Mobile fits in with the cool Fender sunburst styling so it should do pretty well.

Well, as you can see above, you will have to pay an extra $30 on top of the $150 the regular myTouch 3G currently demands (on-contract, naturally), but that will get you a bundled 16GB memory card, not to mention a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack, a few pre-loaded songs from Eric Clapton and others and, of course, that classy woodgrain finish. Not too shabby for an extra thirty bucks, if you ask us.

According to Engadget, Eric Clapton will soon be coming to living rooms all across America to promote T-Mobile's Fender Limited Edition myTouch 3G phone. The device, slated to launch on January 20th, features a faux wood design and a few extras clearly aimed at the classic rock fan. In addition to the 16GB memory card and the 3.5 mm headphone jack, the specially-issued gadget will also come equipped with several apps for guitar gurus, including a doubleTwist music-syncing application. Fender will also launch its own gift bag of guitar goodies for the phone, running Android 1.6 until the anticipated 2.1 update drops later this year.

The Clapton name may not carry the same cultural weight with young pups that it once did, but for the music fanatic demographic that the product is targeting, he couldn't be a better spokesman. T-Mobile USA, Inc. announced that it is teaming up with musician Eric Clapton to help market its new T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender phone.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition, which will be available nationwide starting January 20, costs $180 with a two-year contract.

This is not the first time that T-Mobile has used celebrities to pitch and promote its products. The company has recently brought back actress Catherine Zeta Jones for a cellphone-plan campaign and is using Whoopi Goldberg among others in its myTouch ads.

The Android-based device puts a new spin on the original T-Mobile myTouch 3G. It will be equipped with some preloaded songs including Mr. Clapton classics such “Layla,” “My Father’s Eyes,” “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heart,” and “Wonderful Tonight,”

To sweeten the deal further, T-Mobile’s Fender device comes equipped with a 16 GB microSD card, a 3.5mm headset jack for headphones and an enhanced music player, which will allow customers to create ringtones from songs that are playing.

The phone, which runs Android 1.6, Google’s mobile OS, is expected to be updated to Android 2.1 in the spring.

The device will have new accessories for further customization, including Fender-branded shells, a Fender carrying case, and a docking station with speakers. (The phone is designed in partnership with a guitar company called Fender and has a Fender guitar sunburst-finish inspired design.)

T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) myTouch 3G (known as the HTC Magic in other circles) is getting a pretty slick update come January 20th. By teaming up with Fender and Eric Clapton, T-Mobile will be able to preload this sucker with a bunch of classic songs like “My Father’s Eyes” and “Layla”, along with a few others from Avril Lavigne, Brad Paisley and Wyclef Jean. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also some apps on there for the music buffs, like Guitar: Solo (a guitar simulator) and something called Music Light. T-Mobile already has their hands busy with the Nexus One launch, but this is a nice update for the folks who put a bit more weight in style than function. If you think it’s just a pretty paint job, there’s a whole lot more to it than that – T-Mo’s going to be launching custom music sync solution from doubleTwist, and a host of new accessories (including a Fender carrying case and “Rock Dock”), and new battery doors later on.

T-Mobile this morning said Eric Clapton’s lending his name to the company’s new myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition – the one with a sunburst wood-grain, guitar like design.

Clapton’s appearing in the company’s ads and his songs “Layla,” “My Father’s Eyes,” “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heart” and “Wonderful Tonight” will be preloaded on the HTC device. Also included are songs from Wyclef Jean, Avril Lavigne and Brad Paisley and the “Guitar: Solo” and “Musical Light” applications.

T-Mobile is also contributing Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, which benefits a drug treatment center in Antigua. I wonder if they thought it would be held at the shopping center near T-Mobile USA’s Bellevue headquarters?

The phone goes on sale for Jan. 20 for $180 with a two-year service plan.

Recently, I was able to loan the phone out for 2 weeks from T-Mobile for my review. When I received it, I loved that it came in its own black case (pretty thick I must say). It felt pretty executive and powerful (I felt money behind it). Once I opened the case, the right side had the phone, and the left side had all the accessories (ear phones, charger, etc). The loaner that I received came in Merlot, it was pretty and sleek, but I actually prefer the white, it’s more me. After I got past the design of the phone, which I love, I got to start the phone. The screen opened up to this little android with a finger telling me to touch it. The initial setup was easy, as I had to enter my gmail address, and it opened me up to the world of Mytouch.

My T-Mobile SIM is setup for my T-Mobile G1 Google Android device that I have owned since day 1 (see my full review) and continue to enjoy with the updates and growing Android Market application selection. T-Mobile was the first US wireless carrier to support Android and then rolled out the T-Mobile myTouch 3G to add a second Android and become the carrier of choice for Android fans. T-Mobile will be launching a third Android device, the Motorola CLIQ, very soon, but they are no longer the exclusive Android carrier. Sprint has the awesome HTC Hero with the Samsung Moment coming soon and Verizon will have a couple of devices in 2010. AT&T has nothing announced yet, but there are rumors of a Dell handset. When you decide you want an iPhone, you only have one choice in carrier and form factor, but when you now consider an Android device you can stay with your carrier and/or have a choice in form factor. Let’s take a closer look at what Android devices are or will be coming to each carrier in the US, followed by my thoughts on what I have found to be the best so far.

The Fender Special Edition T-Mobile myTouch 3G says one thing: I may be an Android geek, but I’ll be damned if I’m not using while riding in the passenger seat of a ‘68 Chevelle SS, Clapton blaring over the sound of wind whipping through the cabin.

In all seriousness, though, this is one beautiful phone.

You’ve probably read my review of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, the second Google Android-powered smartphone on the market. In it, I said that it’s the best Android phone on the market — for now, since competitors are nearly on store shelves.

Now infused with Android 1.6 Donut, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a pre-installed 16GB microSD card, the myTouch just got a whole lot more interesting.

But man, if that sunburst woodgrain finish doesn’t raise the hair on the back of my neck.

It will be available “later this year” for a unspecified price.

Believe it or not, Christmas is but 11 weeks away which means that every single tech company on the planet is going to be lighting up our inboxes with press releases about their holiday offerings. The first company to do this for 2009 is T-Mobile. Apart from another chance to get us bloggers talking about the Behold II and the Motorola CLIQ, T-Mobile took the opportunity to introduce two new handsets and a limited edition collaboration piece. The first new handset is the Nokia 3711, a 3G clamshell affair with a 2 megapixel camera, GPS by Telenav, and stereo Bluetooth. The second is the T-Mobile Tap. Presumably made by HTC based upon its appearance, the Tap is an “affordable and attractive” full-touchscreen featurephone that, like the 3711 has 3G, a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth and GPS by Telenav. New in another sense of the word is the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition. I’m just as surprised as some of you may be, with T-Mobile deciding to redesign the MyTouch before the next Android phone (after the Cliq at least). As we have already told you, T-Mobile has a Special Edition MyTouch 3G that is made with Fender in the works, and it is now more than words on a piece of paper. As you can see, there are now press shots of the guitar themed MyTouch. Spec wise, the Fender MyTouch is very similar, just adding the desperately needed 3.5 mm headphone jack; but the outside appearance has been revamped with woodgrain finish. T-Mobile has unveiled its holiday season line of handsets today and one in particular has caught my eye. The device is a limited edition version of the myTouch 3G smartphone running Android. Unfortunately, all T-Mobile offered was a few specs on the device, no pictures are available.

The device will be called the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition and will have a guitar-inspired wood grain finish. Other unique features will include a 3.5mm headphone jack, 16GB microSD card, and preloaded video clips and music from various artists.

The specifications of the device will be the same as the normal myTouch 3G, with the addition of guitar theme style. T-Mobile also plans to launch the CLIQ with Motoblur in time for the holidays along with the Behold II all running Android.

The holidays will be here before we know it and T-Mobile has unveiled some of the handsets that will make up its holiday line. Perhaps the most interesting device in the lineup for the holiday season for Android fans will be the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition. The handset is set to debut later this year and will have a guitar-inspired wood grain finish.

The special edition device will also have a 3.5mm headphone jack, pre-installed 16GB microSD card, and pre-loaded video and audio clips by iconic musicians. We already know that the Samsung Behold II is coming for T-Mobile from Samsung and will be running Android. The device has a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen and is built around multimedia features.

T-Mobile will also be launching the Tap in time for the holidays. The Tap is a touch screen device that will be offered in berry and midnight blue colors. T-Mobile is positioning the Tap as a device that is aimed at the user wanting a cool phone at a low price. The handset will have 3G data access, a 2MP camera with video capture, GPS, Bluetooth and more. The T-mobile Holiday line is rounded out by the Motorola CLIQ and Nokia 3711.

T-Mobile has recently launched a new smartphone, the HTC myTouch, which is based on Google Android. The new device is 3G compliant, and offers features far superior to the G1 Android, the original cellular utilizing Google’s operating system. These features include advanced multimedia capabilities and high-speed Internet access. Google’s first entrance to the cellular market was with the T-Mobile G1. Though it received major attention, it was practically behind most smartphones available, especially due to poor design, resulting in an arrantly non-esthetic phone. Now, after a year of collaboration with known mobile phones’ manufacturer HTC, T-Mobile presents the myTouch 3G, a vastly better cell phone that can clearly compete with most smartphones on the market.

I’ve been spending the week with the new myTough 3g for T-Mobile and ive got to say its a pretty fun phone. For subscribers to Tmobile the options for touch screen goodness has been pretty limited. This new device is a strong upgrade from the first google phone minus the keyboard.

I for one need a keyboard but i also use my smartphone primarily for email and information. This device is unique in that it really brings google to life in a fun and easy way. Unlike the iphone endless activation and static homescreen, the myTouch is a one step login in to all your google accounts and most importantly its very customizable.

By now, you’ve seen the television ads: L.A Lakers coach Phil Jackson, actress and View co-host, Whoopi Goldberg and entrepreneur and Motorcycle Mania host, Jesse James, all touting T-Mobile’s new myTouch phone.

Paid endorsement or not, that such a motley crew could represent one phone is pretty random — but that’s the point. The myTouch is designed as one phone to suit a myriad of tastes. Similar to the iPhone the myTouch offers hundreds — maybe even thousands — of applications. Unlike the iPhone though, these applications are geared not solely towards convenience, but towards personalities and passion. (Case in point: For fashionistas like myself the is the ShopSavvy application which makes shopping easier by comparing prices for products across the country and the web.) For the fitness fanatic, the sports guru or the food enthusiast and beyond there are applications, screen savers and more that can be tailored specifically to your tastes. The added value here is the deep integration of Google services from email to browser to calendar (which I personally can’t live without.)

Donuts for everyone! Well, not everyone — but as we’d heard, at least some G1 and myTouch 3G owners on T-Mobile USA are now being blessed with an official Android 1.6 build over the air. The carrier says it has “begun delivery,” which we take means it’s not all happening at once; that’s the way the 1.5 rollout was handled, so it really doesn’t come as a surprise. Keep checking for that update notification, folks.

Just a couple of weeks after Google released its Android 1.6 SDK to developers, T-Mobile began its official roll out of Android 1.6 (aka Donut) to T-Mobile G1 and T-Mobile MyTouch 3G owners on Thursday. The update will be delivered to customers over the coming days, and though it’s not considered to be a major upgrade to the operating system, Android 1.6 does bring a number of new features and enhancements and fixes a bug that would reboot the phone after dialing 911.

T-Mobile and HTC have together enjoyed a reasonable amount of success with their joint Android offerings. The G1, released in October 2008, has sold over one million units (despite its shortcomings). That makes the G1 — and Android — a winner in the eyes of many.

The Magic went on sale via Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) in the United Kingdom earlier this year. The Magic has also sold more than one million units worldwide, and is now for sale from T-Mobile USA as the myTouch 3G with Google.
For anyone hesitant to adopt the Android platform in general or the HTC G1 in particular, the myTouch 3G should convince most to make the leap.

Hardware Improvements

Let’s face facts: The G1 was not the most attractive smartphone ever made. Not only was it bulky and heavy, it had a difficult-to-use physical QWERTY keyboard and suffered from some serious battery life problems. The myTouch 3G is a vast improvement on all fronts.

It loses the physical keyboard completely. This means it is far lighter, smaller, and easier to carry around than the G1, but it also means you have to perform all text/data entry via an on-screen software keyboard. Some users have problems with that, but it works for many (i.e., the millions of iPhone users).

Even though there is less to love, the myTouch 3G is a better all-around device for everyday use. The plastics feel good in the hand, and all the controls are easily found and used with your thumbs. The myTouch 3G keeps the trackball from the G1, and this is a good supplement to the touch screen for navigating the menus.

Speaking of which, the capacitive display on the myTouch 3G is brilliant. It is bright, colorful, and sharp. E-mails, documents, applications, Web pages, and video all look fantastic. The display is responsive to user input, and I noticed very little hesitation or delay when interacting with the phone.

The one bummer is that the myTouch doesn’t support full multi-touch (a la iPhone-style) out of the box. Some third party applications support their own flavor of multi-touch, and its possible multi-touch will come to future versions of the Android platform.

T-Mobile has cut $30 off the price of its second Android-based smartphone. This brings the cost of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G down to $150. This is a somewhat quick price cut, as this smartphone just debuted early last month. This model offers consumers a much slimmer option than this company’s first Android model, the T-Mobile G1, by leaving off the built-in keyboard. It has tablet shape with a 3.2-inch HVGA Touchscreen and a trackball on its front. For text input, it depends on a virtual keyboard, which can change orientation automatically from portrait to landscape mode, depending on how it is held.
